Hi,
let me say that I'm not new to GNU/Linux, but I'm a total noob to the Gentoo world.
I've installed Sabayon Linux on my desktop PC and I love it,
and I would like to try Pentoo 2009.0 Final on my laptop (a Lenovo G550) to learn more about wireless.

This laptop has a wireless Broadcom BCM4312.
Code:
lspci -vnn | grep Broadcom
04:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g [14e4:4315] (rev 01)
        Subsystem: Broadcom Corporation Device [14e4:04b5]
07:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5906M Fast Ethernet PCI Express [14e4:1713] (rev 02)

Code:
#iwconfig wlan0
wlan0      IEEE 802.11bg  Mode:Managed  Access Point: Not-Associated
           Tx-Power=0 dBm
           Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
           Encryption key:off
           Power Management:off
#ifconfig wlan0
wlan0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
           BROADCAST MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
           RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
           TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

Then I ran:
Code:
#lsmod | grep b43
b43                174668  0
mac80211           181536  1 b43
cfg80211           143272  2 b43,mac80211
ssb                 51712  1 b43
pcmcia              40036  3 b43,ssb,pata_pcmcia
pcmcia_core         42276  3 b43,ssb,pcmcia
#iwconfig wlan0 txpower on
#ifconfig wlan0 up

kernel info:
Code:
uname -rv
2.6.31-pentoo-r3 #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Dec 1 23:37:15 UTC 2009

I have a wireless router configured with WPA-PSK so I followed instructions of Gentoo handbook to configure wpa_supplicant but I get this messages
Code:
#wpa_supplicant -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
Could not set interface 'wlan0' UP
l2_packet_receive - recvfrom: Network is down
ioctl[SIOCGIWSCAN]: Network is down
ioctl[SIOCGIWSCAN]: Network is down
Failed to initiate AP scan.
((it repeats until Ctrl+C ))

According to the "New wifi stack 2.6.32_rc7 with injection and fragmentation patches" it should work, but then in wireless.kernel.org it says that I need a newer kernel: "supported 2.6.32 and later"

What I'm missing?
The wifi stack is applied in my kernel? How can I see that?
Should I upgrade my kernel?

Thanks!

Can you connect to your router manually using iwconfig, ifconfig, and dhclient. You might have entered your password wrong in the /etc/conf.d/net wrong. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/h ... t=4&chap=4.

Thanks Amondeep.
Actually I followed the gentoo handbook (i mention it in my first post)

With iwlist wlan0 scan I can see the network.
wpa_supplicant is well configured (my pass is correct)

Yesterday without using wpa_supplicant I started wicd and saw the wireless network.
When I tried to connect, it gave me an IP but my wlan disconnected inmediately and freeze my laptop.

I'll try again checking the logs with "tail -f" to see wtf is happen
thanks again

well...
This is weird

As I said I installed Pentoo 2009.0 and tried to use wpa_supplicant without succeed.

But...
I detected a little bug in b43load script that I solved
Then I ran:
# b43load b43
# ifconfig wlan0 up
Start wicd and... wtf! It's working! I can see my network, I configured it and connected to it!

Thanks anyway :)
